Maximilian Brien Maximilian Brien studied economics in his bachelor’s degree at the University of Heidelberg. He joined HIIK in 2018 as a researcher for conflicts in Mexico in the regional Working Group ‘Conflicts in the Americas’, of which he became a head in 2019. In 2020 he became a member of the board and is the head of the editing department and Co-Editor in Chief of the Conflict Barometer 2020. brien@hiik.de
Eduard Ebert Eduard Ebert became a member of the Institute in 2019 and started as a researcher for conflicts in Belarus and Russia. Since May 2020 he has been a member of the board of directors and is chairman of the IT department. ebert@hiik.de
Giacomo Köhler Giacomo Köhler has been studying Political Science and History at Heidelberg University since 2016. He became a member in 2017, initially working as an editor for conflicts in China. In 2019 he became one of the heads of the regional working group Asia & Oceania, responsible for conflicts in the China region. Since May 2020 he has joined the Board of Directors and heads the Data Management Department. koehler@hiik.de
Leon Lewin Leon Lewin studies Political Science and Anthropology in Heidelberg since 2017. After spending a gap year in South Africa, he is deeply interested in the research of political processes in Africa. Leon joined the HIIK in 2018 where he observes ongoing conflicts in Togo, Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso. In 2020 he became board member and head of the finance and law department. lewin@hiik.de
Maimilian Orth Maximilian Orth studied political science and psychology in his bachelor’s degree at the University of Heidelberg. Currently he’s working for a consulting firm in Berlin. He has been with HIIK since 2017 as an editor for conflicts in Kazakhstan. In 2018, he became regional head for conflicts in Central Asia and India. Since May 2020 he has been a member of the board of directors and head of the Communications Committee. orth@hiik.de
Katharina Valjak Katharina Valjak completed her B.A. in Political Science and her dual master’s degree in Peace and Global Governance as well as International Relations. Currently, she works as an advisor for Eurasian affairs at the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia. She has been with the HIIK since 2013 as a researcher for conflicts in Myanmar. Between 2017 and 2020, she was in charge of conflicts in Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia) as one of the Asia & Oceania regional heads. In May 2020, she became head of the methodology department. valjak@hiik.de
